The Top Health Benefits of Bowling

Bowling is a sport that has one of the richest histories and dates back about 4,000 years to Rome and Greece. If you love to bowl, you aren’t alone. In fact, over 25% of all Americans go bowling annually, which makes it the biggest participating sport.

Today, bowling is a $4 billion industry, and there are more than 3,000 bowling centers in the U.S. alone. Along with being competitive and fun, bowling also provides multiple health benefits. Keep reading to find out why you should take your bowling shoes out of storage and enjoy knocking down some pins

Muscle Strengthening and Toning

Bowling helps increase muscle mass. As you bowl, you work the muscles in your lower body. This is because you are walking quite a bit, with the weight of your ball in tow. You also swing your arm when you throw the bowling ball, and the flexing and stretching that occurs provides enough of a workout to help strengthen the joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons throughout your arm.

Weight Loss

Regular bowling sessions can help you drop a few extra pounds. This is thanks to its ability to speed up your metabolism. While the game is played in a small area, the constant movement you engage in while playing helps you burn off any extra fat.

You work your legs out while walking back and forth and work the rest of your body when you lift and swing the ball to send it down the lane. While the exact number of calories you burn depends on your weight and how much effort you put into your game, you may burn upwards of 300 calories while playing.

Work on Your Socialization Skills

Bowling is something you can do with friends, family members, and people you meet at the bowling center. It’s a great way to meet new people and develop new friendships. Because of this, bowling allows you to be more social, which is a huge part of a person’s health and well-being. You can use your love of bowling to find companionship by way of bowling teams and leagues. This may help ease your loneliness and give you something to look forward to every week. It’s been proven by multiple studies that developing a social relationship around a shared interest can help extend your longevity.

Reduce the Risk of Disease

If you live a sedentary lifestyle, it may result in several health issues. In fact, this is something that increases your risk of heart disease significantly. When you exercise, which includes going bowling, it will reduce your risk of diabetes, heart attacks, a stroke, increase bone density, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, help your body better use oxygen, and improve your overall circulation. Try to bowl at least once per week to see the most benefits possible.

Are You Ready to Bowl?

When it comes to bowling, there are more than a few potential health benefits. Keep the information here in mind and grab your bowling shoes for a fun round that will improve your health.

A Tale Of Ten Pins

Running a bowling alley is like running any kind of complex operation.

Everything is humming along well, until suddenly, it stops. Somebody throws a wrench in the process, or, seemingly without any human intervention, some unseen obstacle presents itself…what are we talking about? Well…

A few weeks ago, Sam was behind the counter and everything was going well, until the folks down on the end reported a strange problem – on a pin reset, it seemed the machine was only spitting out nine pens instead of ten. The pin on the corner was just gone.

We had one of the maintenance guys go over the pin setter and determine that everything was working correctly. We replaced the pin, and reset the machine.

An hour later, another group is using the same lane, the lane on the end, and they come back telling us that the same and pin is missing again.

This time Sam and the maintenance guy go into all of the spaces in and around the pin setter (a quite technical installation) to look for a missing pin, and find nothing but empty space.

It was starting to get eerie.

But then there was the logistical concern – what do you do in a situation like that?

What we did first was tie off the lane and put it out of commission.

In the end, we ended up getting a national firm to come in and replace the entire pin setter structure, and basically refurbish the entire lane until it was working correctly again.

Every time we look down that way now, we cross our fingers.

Sometimes there’s no easy immediate solution to a problem, but that doesn’t mean you give up!

We could have just left that end lane out of commission for weeks or even months.

But excellence is important in any job, in any business, and a bowling alley is no exception.

You’ll find that same level of care and excellence in everything that we offer – in our snack bar, our escape room and other neat amenities for visitors.

Our philosophy is if you can’t do something well, don’t do it at all.

Sadly, that’s not the mantra of a lot of local businesses that tend to cut corners or do things poorly.

But when you come here, you can expect a standard of service and operational integrity. Come to Plainfield Lanes for a good time! We are ready to accommodate your group, for bowling, for an event, and for other good fun.

Fun Stuff!

When you’re experiencing the winter doldrums, or you have a slow day in any of the other seasons, come on down to Plainfield Lanes and get your game up toward the 300 mark. Or just have fun! There’s a lot more to our place than bowling – although of course, bowling is the centerpiece. When you invest in lanes, you want to create a perfect bowling experience.

Bowling is what’s hot right now. Just look at the Super Bowl commercials where Steve Buscemi mans the counter, and Serena Williams, dressed up like ‘the Jesus,’ intimidates with her own ball.

It’s a play on something that was made decades ago, but the popularity of bowling as a pastime has only grown! That’s good for us, and it’s good for you, if you live around these parts. You may or may not see Sam Elliott dressed up like a cowboy, but you will have a rootin, tootin time on the lanes! Minus the tumbleweeds.

League Play

One thing you find out when you’re watching the big Lebowski is that players take league play very seriously.

In some cases, much too seriously…much like John Goodman’s infamous character in the Coen Bros. film, some of us just get really passionate about bowling.

But even outside of the Lebowski context, league play is important to many local players.

We have league operations that take place in a controlled informal environment for those who need to play by the rules.

We also have informal recreational bowling for amateurs – families and friends and kiddos of all ages and sizes.

It’s fun stuff, and we also have extras like an escape room and a great snack bar, so come on down and check it out! See what you’ve been missing!

How many times have you heard somebody talking about how there’s nothing to do, and saying “let’s go bowling!”

Your eyes light up, because this is just a fun way to pass time. Come experience some ‘strikes and gutters’ and the thrill of the game – improve your arm and your outlook with time at a warm and welcoming bowling alley!

Or, as mentioned, gear up for the perfect event to celebrate a life transition or anything else. Browse the website to see all of the extras that we offer here at our unique fun location! We will help you to make your party all it can be, with the great customer service and extras that optimize your experience. See more on our site, and call us for details.

Five Foods For a Kickin-Butt Super Bowl Party

Where are you going to spend your night enjoying the championship?

NFL fans can file into Plainfield Lanes and enjoy the game in a warm and relaxed setting, with some very tasty plates – not to mention a spot in one of the most interesting bowling “halls” around.

Here are five of these savories that we recommend from our snack shop.

Nachos – grab and gab with these artfully crafted nacho chip dishes. All of the classic ingredients are there, and as you cheer for your side, you’ll enjoy the crackling crunch of an easy to devour snack.

Mini corndogs – it’s also very satisfying to bite into a juicy bit of meat wrapped in corndog batter, and although some jokers might say these look like little fingers (come on, Steve!), they’re a very popular part of our menu!

Beer battered onion rings – as you down these delicacies, you can pretend that the onion ring is like the championship ring that the victor will be wearing after the big night. Or you can just douse them in an appropriate sauce and send them down the hatch.

Cheese bread – this is one of our best sellers with garlic and Wisconsin cheese notes and a side dish of marinara. Again, it’s easy to integrate into a game watching environment, unlike a salad or plate of spaghetti.

Potato Skins – enjoy the potato skins with the bacon and mozzarella provolone mix. We do!

When you think about it our menu kind of reflects the cultural tastes that you’d expect when you’re watching the big game. As lampooned on many insurance commercials and ads for detergent, you’re not likely to be trying to bake muffins while you’re watching or spearing arugula with a tiny salad knife. That’s not to say that any food doesn’t have a place in the football Pantheon – but you know, there’s just something about chowing down on this stuff that’s super-fun!

Don’t forget to wear your jersey, and root for your team, Whether they hail from eastern seaboard locations like much of the NFC division or West Coast megacities or somewhere in between. Just remember no fighting lanes

The Super Bowl is a big deal around here and people like to watch it in our space.

Our Super Bowl and other annual parties are legendary events, so check on availability as soon as possible, because we do get filled up. See you there!

Great Tips For Hosting a Bowling Party For Your Child’s Birthday

One of the most important days in a child’s year is their birthday. The average parent is willing to spend a lot of money to make this day special for their children. Throwing a party that your child and their friends will remember for years to come is easier said than done. The first step in the birthday party planning process is choosing the right venue.

If your child loves bowling and playing games, then hosting their birthday party at a bowling alley is a great idea. Here are some things to consider when trying to host a great bowling party for your child’s birthday.

Selecting the Right Bowling Alley

If there are multiple bowling alleys in the area where you live, then you have to do some research before choosing one. Rushing through this venue selection process can result in lots of problems later on. If you are looking for a venue that offers more than just bowling, then Plainfield Lanes is a great idea. When choosing our bowling alley to host your child’s birthday, you can take advantage of things like:

  • Competitively priced birthday packages

  • Escape room

  • Game room

  • Great food

  • Goodie bags

  • Personal party pro to help with the party planning experience

Our team’s main goal is to help you plan a birthday party that your child will love.

Send Out Invitations Early

Most American adults have an extremely busy schedule. If you want your child’s birthday party to be packed with their friends and family members, then you need to carve out some time to buy and send out invitations. The longer you wait to send out these invitations, the harder it will be to get the turnout your child expects.

This is why you need to avoid procrastinating and send out your invitations. Before you can send out these invitations, you need to get addresses from all of the people your child wants to attend their party. One of the best tools to use to get these addresses is social media.

Creating a post asking people to email you with their addresses can help you get this information in a timely manner without having to place tons of calls. Utilizing the power of technology is the best way to make the party planning process more manageable.

Keep Things Moving During the Party

If you want the people who attend your child’s party to have a good time, you need to keep things moving. This means you need to avoid long lulls between the time your guests arrive and when gifts are opened. After the gifts are opened, your child and their friends can start enjoying all of the games in the bowling alley. Creating a schedule of events before the party starts can help you stay on track.

There is no denying just how memorable a bowling alley birthday party can be. If you are ready to start the birthday party planning process, our team is standing by to lend you a hand.

Bowling: a wonderful sport, with an amazing history

In the United States alone, over 70 million people play bowling every year, making it the US most engaging sport. However, not many people know that for a short time, bowling was illegal in the United States.

Somewhere around the 16th century, bowling reached America through European immigrants. However, the first indoor bowling alley was opened about two hundred years later in New York. It didn’t take long for this exciting sport to become a sensation and gain popularity in early American society. Soon, the indoor bowling halls spread across the country, especially in the areas predominantly populated by german people. In 1895, the rules of the sport were officially standardized through the establishment of the American Bowling Congress, also known as the ABC ( now USBC). The new regulations had a positive impact on the popularity of the sport, which was soon to become common in places such as private clubs, firehouses or even churches.

However, at the beginning of the 19th century, bowling alleys were mainly owned by bars and pubs. Unfortunately, the culture of gambling and crime has become associated with bowling and that’s what led the sport to gain a bad reputation. As silly as that sounds, in the 1840s, the state of Connecticut has banned all ownership of nine-pin lanes in a desperate attempt to curb gambling and crime.

To avoid the law, bowling players simply added an extra pin to the game, neutralizing the ban and giving birth to this version of the sport we now enjoy.

Ever since there have been numerous introductions as the sport advanced. For example, until 1950, the pins were simply reset by hand. In 1946, though, Gottfried Schmidt designed the first automatic pinsetter, bringing a major improvement to the game.

The materials for the balls used in the game had also chanced as the sport evolved, changing from wood to rubber to urethane and the current resin-covered ones that we use now.

Even though bowling had its golden age in the 50s and 60s, it still remains one of the most popular sports worldwide, engaging more than 70 million Americans every year. And that’s only normal. It is a fun and easy game that everyone can enjoy, regardless of age or athletic ability.
