Bowling: a wonderful sport, with an amazing history

In the United States alone, over 70 million people play bowling every year, making it the US most engaging sport. However, not many people know that for a short time, bowling was illegal in the United States.

Somewhere around the 16th century, bowling reached America through European immigrants. However, the first indoor bowling alley was opened about two hundred years later in New York. It didn’t take long for this exciting sport to become a sensation and gain popularity in early American society. Soon, the indoor bowling halls spread across the country, especially in the areas predominantly populated by german people. In 1895, the rules of the sport were officially standardized through the establishment of the American Bowling Congress, also known as the ABC ( now USBC). The new regulations had a positive impact on the popularity of the sport, which was soon to become common in places such as private clubs, firehouses or even churches.

However, at the beginning of the 19th century, bowling alleys were mainly owned by bars and pubs. Unfortunately, the culture of gambling and crime has become associated with bowling and that’s what led the sport to gain a bad reputation. As silly as that sounds, in the 1840s, the state of Connecticut has banned all ownership of nine-pin lanes in a desperate attempt to curb gambling and crime.

To avoid the law, bowling players simply added an extra pin to the game, neutralizing the ban and giving birth to this version of the sport we now enjoy.

Ever since there have been numerous introductions as the sport advanced. For example, until 1950, the pins were simply reset by hand. In 1946, though, Gottfried Schmidt designed the first automatic pinsetter, bringing a major improvement to the game.

The materials for the balls used in the game had also chanced as the sport evolved, changing from wood to rubber to urethane and the current resin-covered ones that we use now.

Even though bowling had its golden age in the 50s and 60s, it still remains one of the most popular sports worldwide, engaging more than 70 million Americans every year. And that’s only normal. It is a fun and easy game that everyone can enjoy, regardless of age or athletic ability.
